The Decline of Civilization

I got a haircut the other day, and the stylist was lamenting the downfall of civilization at the hands of such computer games as Grand Theft Auto. I gently said “there are other driving games”, but statistics didn’t seem to be her strong point.

It’s a fashionable topic, but as David Brooks points out, the trends are (at least south of the border) towards a better society:

Since the early 1990’s, domestic violence has dropped by more than half. Violent crime is down 55%. Drunk driving has declined 38%. Teenage pregnancy is down 28%. Divorce rates are declining. Child poverty is down. Elementary test scores are up.

Seems a cause for celebration and encouragement rather than gloom and doom.

Employed in Useful Labour

Gentle readers,

It seems fit to continue the reanimation of Balafon.net with the news that I have been offered, and accepted, a job with a software company in Vancouver, doing work in biometrics and cryptography.

Those of you who put up with my whinging the last little while are due no end of thanks and appreciation. I’ll be having a party to celebrate soon; stay tuned.

He’s Baack!

Gentle Readers:

After over two weeks of battle with two separate web hosting providers, Balafon is back on the air, hopefully for good.

In general news, I’m still looking for work, preferably a software development position in a technical field.

In space news, the shuttle Discovery made it into orbit today with only minor mishaps.

Stay tuned…

Pounding the Pavement Redux

Just had my first job interview in a long, long time. I was pretty freaked out — and sweaty — but I think it went OK. I think I did OK on the technical side of things, so it’s up to the needs of the company. Hopefully this process will get easier with practice.

But they didn’t even ask to see the game! I slaved away on it all last night and this morning to get it ready, and then I wasn’t asked for a demo. Grr.
