Another week

It’s been two weeks. Ugh.

Truth to tell, serotonin levels have been pretty low. It’s been all I could do to manage work. No energy for self-indulgent whinging. Some changes have been made, so I’m hoping things will be sunnier.

Called an erstwhile friend last week — this is the last time, I swear, as they always beg off, promise to call back, and never do — and had nothing much to talk about. I happen to have been working on something interesting at work for the past little bit, but I really shouldn’t talk about it. And the “hurt my back and depressed most of the time” shtick gets old pretty quick.

Took the SkyTrain to North Van yesterday to see the Caribbean festival. I guess I got there too early, as there wasn’t much going on. I was going to meet a friend there, but they were delayed, and I finally bailed, as I was getting a headache from the sun and the loud samba music. We did eventually hook up and catch Pirates again.

Some parting thoughts: Why the hell is it so tricky to get a binary search working right? FS2004 should be out any day now.

July 14

So much for a daily journal :-)

Had a quiet weekend, which was good since I was feeling kinda feverish. Spent most of Saturday playing Flight Simulator — where I rediscovered the well-known feature that Prince Edward Island is under water in FS2K2. It’s rumored to be fixed in the new version.

My friend A had a farewell party — she’s off to Yokohama to teach English.

Ran into my friend S, who’s been in Lebanon for six months. She gave me a Palestinian flag, which of course I accepted with glee. I’ll use to mess with the minds of people who’ve heard my political views.

Today it’s back to finite state automata. It’s a little more tedious now that my software is integrated into the larger system, since it takes longer to rebuild and test.

July 9

Since I have never seen any evidence that anyone ever reads this site, I think I’ll try to turn it into more of a journal and less of a news blog. So:

Finished up the system integration part of my project at work today. Now I just have to get it working with real data. Always nice to have.

Finished reading the relevant chapters of Tannenbaum today. The description of how capabilities are protected in Amoeba was a forehead-slapping moment. Of course. So I think I’ll work on the design of the object store a bit, and then dive into some actual code. Someday.

TKD practice today. Completely blanked on the first part of the form we’re learning, but had the middle and end down. My right hamstring seems to be in permanent spasm. I should stretch more, I suppose.

I’m trying to get back into flight simulator a bit more. Yesterday I flew the 737-400 a bit, but crashed on landing. Today I flew it from San Fransisco to Portland, and greased the landing. Something wierd with wxRe, though: ATC assigned me the reciprocal runway that ground was assigning takeoffs. So a heavy jet got takeoff clearance on 28L just as I was over the middle marker for 10R. I landed anyway, since there’s no go-around option for the ATC. Hope the new version handles things better.

Hand-flying the big jets is getting easier. I’m still not up to flying an approach, but I hand-flew the 737 to altitude, making course changes as necessary.
