Researchers have been able to modify the shapes of various features of developing mice by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/342\/6157\/1241006\" target=\"_blank\">changing their &#8220;non-coding&#8221; DNA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that so-called &#8220;junk DNA&#8221;, or &#8220;non-coding DNA&#8221; is actually the program that controls the use of the coding DNA, and it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Junk_DNA#Functions_of_noncoding_DNA\" target=\"_blank\">startlingly like a programming language<\/a>, with switches to turn on and off the use of other parts of the genome depending on context, control flow expressions, and many more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are starting to learn how DNA controls the development of physical structures.
